Description

The recordings of these two musicians (a krar and masenqo player/vocalist and a vocalist, both of whom will remain unnamed for now) demonstrate the sounds coming from Silver Spring, Maryland's Abyssinia restaurant specifically and that area's massive Ethiopian and Eritrean population generally. These two folks, and their canned rhythm section (after the first track anyhow) crank this stuff out every Saturday night at this restaurant from roughly 9:30 until 2:00 AM, and they build up a head of steam (note the 4th track). These recordings are horribly unprofessional, and not wonderful fidelity-wise. However, I plan to start documenting as many traditional Ethiopian musicians in the DC area as I can find, so hopefully, there will be more music with better fidelity and details on the musicians in the upcoming months.
