’87 to ‘95
20 to 30 kids
Uniform wearing, single classroom, parochial upbringing
And of that group of kids
Half of them were boys
Fuck the freeze bell, they’re playing football on a field of rocks and soil
But that’s the place where I
First learned to run
Where I snuffed my asthma out
And I’d like to think
That in the end
Those scraps and cuts made us strong
But anytime they had a voice
“Ask us how we improve the school”
I know dem boys would all agree
You gotta look out the classroom
Decades passed and things stayed the same
But I heard through the grapevine, I heard things have changed
My first thought is good for them
But the kid inside remains envious
Because they got the grass
Even if it’s synthetic grass
And who paid for that?...for that
Grass on the field
